11 Common Interior Design Mistakes & How to Avoid Them?

Interior Design Mistakes w.r.t Over Ornamentation and Lack of Circulation Space

Well, if you had the option to choose between a DIY approach and professional interior design for your home, what would you go for? I know, DIY sounds exciting. Creative. Almost like those makeover scenes in movies where everything just comes together with a few colours, rugs, and cushions. But you know what? The reality is not that simple. There’s a fair chance you might end up making a few interior design mistakes along the way; some small, some that actually affect how your space looks and functions.

See, designing a home isn’t just about aesthetics. There’s planning involved. And there’s functionality. Then there’s usability too. And honestly, that’s where most people go wrong. Because a space might look good for a while… but if it doesn’t work for your daily life, it starts feeling uncomfortable very quickly. And trust me, I’ve seen this happen in so many homes as a professional interior designer. So before you go all in, here are some of the most common interior design mistakes you should know about; and definitely avoid.

  • Following trends blindly, trying to DIY everything, over-crowding the space and compensating on functionality are the biggest interior design mistakes people commit in 2026.
  • A well-designed home always balances function, visual weight, and environmental response, i.e light, ventilation & climate
  • Good interiors are not about adding more; they’re about editing consciously, controlling visual clutter, and allowing spatial breathing room.

You know, interior design looks quite fun and easy from the outside. But try DIYing it, and you’ll realise how confusing it actually gets. Some people pick out-of-proportion furniture, some over-decorate, and the rest? They just place everything randomly and compromise on circulation.

Trust me, I’ve seen this a lot in Indian homes. People unknowingly make quite a few interior design mistakes, and then struggle with space, light, and storage issues later on. So here are the top 8 mistakes you should definitely avoid.

1. Interior Design Mistakes with Lighting Design

Well, I personally feel that lightning is undoubtedly one of the most under-estimated elements in interior design. I mean, most people rely on a single ceiling light in each room even today! Thus, it eventually feels flat, harsh or uninviting like anything! There’s just no depth, warmth, mood or a vibe to such a space.

Hence, I suggest you try layering your lights. Perhaps ambient light for overall brightness, task lighting for specific activities like reading or cooking & even a bit of accent lighting to highlight things and textures.

Say a living room, for example, should ideally include ceiling lights, floor lamps, and perhaps wall-mounted lights for balance. But kitchens, on the other hand, can go with focused lighting over work surfaces. And once you get it right, your space will truly feel complete, trust me!

2. Choosing Furniture Without Considering Scale and Proportion

Ah scale! This is the most common of all! I’ve seen people scrolling endless on Pinterest, scanning brochures and what not. Then, they even buy the piece without thinking about their room, space and overall decor style. So, it might get too bulky or the space; or too small to even make an impact.

That’s where scale and proportion come in. See, every piece of furniture in your room should relate to two things: size of the room & the other elements present there. If it does not, you are creating the same interior design mistakes as the rest others.  So yes, measure your space carefully first. Then, create a rough layout to check how everything will fit together & how much room remains for movement. Because no matter how good something looks, if it blocks circulation, it won’t feel comfortable.

3. Interior Design Mistakes with TOO Much Aesthetic

It’s 2026. And, let’s be honest, we all want our homes to look as Instagrammable as possible. But you know, there’s a thin line here. Like, too much aesthetic and maintenance can be frustrating to live in, especially in India.

I’ve seen living rooms that look stunning but don’t have comfortable seating. Kitchens that look aesthetic but barely have any usable workspace. And honestly, that’s where things eventually start feeling off. In fact, good interior design should always start with an understanding of how the space will be used. Like, a family room will obviously have different requirements compared to a bachelor apartment or rental right? So, if we don’t cater to them separately, we’ll again be making the same interior design mistakes. And that might just strip us off our daily peace.

To avoid this, think about your routine first. Where do you need storage? How do you move around? What do you use the space for? And once you get it right, you’ll have all your comfort, budget and peace right in place.

4. Overcrowding the Space with Furniture and Décor

Now this one is one of the most common interior design mistakes ever. And that’s trying to fill every corner of the room. Well, I get it. We all feel like empty spaces look incomplete. So we keep adding furniture, décor, accessories… until suddenly, the room starts feeling heavy and cluttered.

But you know what? Crowded spaces end up looking smaller, and more importantly, they become harder to navigate. So, always choose ‘what to keep,’ and ‘what to leave.’ That means, keep your functional pieces and leave some negative or circulation spaces for balance & visual clarity. The space will undoubtedly look more calm, sophisticated and inviting that way!

5. Interior Design Mistakes with Storage Planning

Tell me who all thinks of storage as an after thought in interior design? Well, even I did, back when I didn’t know design. But now, I know that it’s one of the most critical aspects of a functional home. You can have the most beautiful interiors, but if there’s no proper storage, the space will start looking messy within weeks. In fact, I’ve seen this happen so often; people underestimate how much storage they actually need, and then clutter slowly takes over. It’s indeed one of the most messy interior design mistakes ever.

And, to avoid that, please do plan your storage right from the beginning. This includes your wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, smart additions like beds, drawers, storage benches, everything! In fact, I also suggest getting vertical storage, say tall cabinets or wall-mounted shelves for extra storage. Even multi-functional furniture or hidden bed & drawer storage is a wise choice.

6. Following Trends Without Considering Longevity

It’s 2026. And as a designer, I’ve noticed how most people get carried away by trends and social aesthetics blindly. And honestly, that’s one of the biggest interior design mistakes too.

Because trends change. Fast. What looks amazing today might feel outdated in just a couple of years, right? And then you might just feel stuck with finishes, colours, or furniture that you no longer even like.

Hence, the smarter way out is to create a base design. Keep your big elements like flooring, furniture, and wall finishes simple and long-lasting. Then bring in trends through things you can easily change, say in your cushions, artwork, décor, even lighting. This way, you can update your space without needing a full redesign every few years. And honestly, it’ll save you from committing expensive interior design mistakes in the long run!

7. Interior Design Mistakes with Poor Color Choices

Now, color is where you guys can indeed make or break the design. I’ve seen people either play it too safe with the same tones everywhere, or go too bold without really understanding the accents. And it eventually looks equally dull, visually chaotic and full in both cases.

Instead, try planning a cohesive colour palette right from the start. I usually suggest keeping a neutral base and then adding a few accent shades to bring in some personality. That way, the space will feel balanced & composed. Also, test your paint always. Colours can look completely different depending on natural and artificial lighting, so always try samples on your walls before finalising. This one step alone can save you from a lot of regret later.

8. Ignoring Natural Light and Ventilation

You know, in India, especially in cities like Ahmedabad, we really can’t afford to ignore light and ventilation. The climate here is already warm and dry. So if your home doesn’t get enough natural light or airflow, it starts feeling hot, stuffy, and honestly, quite uncomfortable to live in.

But I still see people blocking windows with heavy furniture or thick, dark curtains. And these interior design mistakes eventually kill the vibe of your space. Instead, I always suggest making the most of whatever openings you have. Let the light come in. Use lighter, breathable fabrics that allow both airflow & privacy. And I promise that your home will feel far healthier and pleasant to live in.

9. Improper Curtain Placement

Curtains might indeed feel small. But trust me, they have the full capacity to affect how your space feels visually in terms of size, height, and volume. Hence, hanging them too low makes your windows look smaller and your ceiling feel shorter than it actually is.

And honestly, I’ve seen curtain-related interior design mistakes so many times.

What you can do instead is to mount your curtains closest to the ceiling and extend them all the way to the floor. This way, they create an illusion of height, space and make the room feel spacious in no time! It’s a small shift, I know. But the impact is indeed huge!

10. Interior Design Mistakes due to Lack of Personalization

What’s even a home that doesn’t reflect its owner’s personality, lifestyle & taste buds right? However, many interiors still end up looking generic, even in 2026. And that’s frankly because of all the trend-related interior design mistakes you might commit!

See, design magazines, online platforms or even vlogs are great. But there’s a real fine line between inspiration & copying them as it is. You can use 5-6 elements for their references; but blindly copying everything might feel impersonal!

In fact, always try to reflect your own story. Maybe cues on how you live, what you like, and what actually matters to you. It can be as simple as adding family photos, travel souvenirs or custom artwork. Or, as large as designing gallery walls, feature walls and so on. Your home will truly look your own this way!

    11. Trying to Do Everything Without Professional Guidance

I get this. Most of us think we can handle interiors on our own. And honestly, for small things? You absolutely can.

But when it comes to designing an entire home, things complicate quickly. I’ve seen people struggle with layouts, wrong measurements, poor material choices, and what not! And eventually they end up spending more time and money fixing those interior design mistakes.

That’s exactly where working with a professional actually makes a difference. Not just the aesthetics btw, but also for the function, execution and ageing. Plus, you’ll obviously have lesser budget over-runs, stress and material issues. And if you are already there in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, or Rajasthan, our experienced interior designers are just a call away for the same!
